Acid-fast staining is a special bacteriological stain method used to identify acid-fast organisms such as the genus Mycobacterium. Acid-fast bacilli are characterized by wax-like, nearly impermeable cell walls. These organisms contain mycolic acid and large amounts of fatty acids, waxes, and complex lipids, which prevent decolorization with acids during the staining process. This kit includes Methylene Blue, Carbol Fuchsin, and Hydrochloric Acid, to perform the Ziehl–Neelsen method, or hot method of counterstaining which provides contrast with surrounding organisms. The acid fast organisms appear red under a light microscope. Protocols and procedures vary with tradition, preference and certain organisms (i.e., TB), and as such, we recommended you research your application for the appropriate method. BZ0037/BZ5006
